Octave Thanet papers, 1890-1893.

Collection includes a letter written by Thanet to Sara B. Maxwell (Feb. 10, 1893) sent from Clover Bend. In 1892 Maxwell (formerly the Iowa state librarian) was employed by the Iowa Commissioners to make a collection of books and pamphlets by Iowa authors for exhibition at the 1893 World's Fair at Chicago. The contents of this letter indicate that it may be related to preparations for this exhibit. Also included are a brief note sent from Clover Bend (March 26, 1990) addressed to "Dear Madam" which refers to selecting from a list of Thanet's books; an autographed portrait of Thanet; and an undated postcard illustrated with a picture of a large home addressed to "Mr. Harlan."
